And The Day Finally Arrived — We Voted

This will be a short blog, just to say that today in my household, we had three generation of women voting. My mother, my daughter, and I went to the Registrar of Voters and submitted our ballots.

We went a week early because we didn’t want my mom out on election day to possibly have to stand in long lines with others. And I wanted to get a picture of my daughter voting for the first time.

We are lucky to live at this time in history where woman can vote, and to live in a country where we get the opportunity to have our voices heard.

My mother immigrated to this country in the 1960s. My parents never intended to stay permanently. My father was a JFK enthusiast, and he wanted to be part of building a great future. He wanted to live in the United States for a while, but he intended to return to Argentina one day. As time passed, I came along, then my brother five years after me. They started to build a life here, and it became more difficult to leave.

Unfortunately, once we were grown and my dad started to consider moving back to Argentina, he was in a terrible accident that took his life before he could return.

My mother made the choice to remain in this country and to become a citizen. I remember her studying for the exam and very proudly waving the little American flag they give all new citizens.

She has never missed the opportunity and responsibility to vote.

Neither have I.

And hopefully, neither will my daughter.

We are all proud Americans with our own unique way of looking at the world, and we get to express these beliefs and ideas through voting. This to me, is what makes our country so wonderful.

Tomorrow, my blog will return to the themes of writing, but for today I wanted to write about voting because I’m proud of both my mom and daughter. But also, because voting is one of the rights that allows me impact my society which impacts my ability to pursue my dream of writing.

Thank you for letting me share!
