Becoming a Writer

Figure Out Your Career Path: genres, goals, publication types

The first job of a professional writer is to determine what they want to write, and the second is how they are going to reach their goal.

Most of us know what we enjoy reading and writing. We can probably pinpoint the moment in our youth when we fell in love with an author or a genre. For me, I liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and A Wrinkle in Time. I also like A Call of the Wild, although it broke my heart and made me cry. But it wasn’t until I read Jane Eyre that realized the kind of stories I truly loved. From there, I read every type of romance novel I could get my hands on.

When I first started putting pen to paper, it was a romance that emerged.

But knowing what you want to write is only the first part of becoming a writer. Once you conclude that you want to be a writer, that you’d like to write your own novel, and that you’d like to get it published, you need to determine how that is all going to happen. You must build your career path just like you would for any other career. You’ll want to choose to write in the genre that interests you the most and that you have the most chance of success. Set goals. And plan a publication strategy.
