How to Avoid Author Intrusion

A difficult thing to avoid for authors is becoming part of the story. What do I mean by that? Shouldn’t the author put him or herself into the story. Authors are always being told to develop their voice and their own style. Doesn’t that mean that they should put as much of themselves into the book as possible?
