They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression — and for writers, that moment is the opening line. Opening lines are the most rewritten part of a novel because we know instinctively that if we don’t capture the reader’s attention immediately, we might lose them forever.

The first sentence of a novel carries immense weight because it sets the tone. It raises questions. It makes a promise. It’s the doorway, the entry into a new world. So, we want to get it right.

But in a world filled with distractions and endless entertainment options, it has increasingly become a challenge to easily capture a reader’s interest. It’s difficult to get someone to stop long enough to pick up a book and read, much less keep them reading. This means that your opening line needs to really grab the reader’s attention and refuse to let go.

So, what are the secrets to crafting that unforgettable first line? How do famous authors do it? The secret is that it’s not such a secret. It involves good writing and you can do it by following these steps.
