Should You Have an Agent?
Ideas to consider before you begin your search for the perfect agent
If your dream is to write a novel or a movie script, you’ve probably been told or intuitively know that you’ll need an agent.
An agent can help you in three ways.
· First, your agent can give you suggestions on how to improve your manuscript and get it in the best condition for a possible sale.
· Second, you agent is your partner and is hopefully just as enthusiastic about your writing as you are, so she will have a similar vision for your writing and your career in general.
· Lastly, your agent will have the important contacts with publishers and be the one who will sell your story and negotiate the best contract deal for you.
A difficult relationship
Agents wear many hats, from dealing with you the writer and helping you write the best book or script to dealing with contracts and legal language that can affect the rest of your career.
But agents can be difficult to find and to keep. I’ve had five agents which seems like a lot. Each time I’ve changed agents it was because something wasn’t working in the relationship, or they simply left. My first agent for example was located in Los Angeles…
