Where are the Book Buyers?

We need to encourage readers to support authors and books

I remember the days when bookstores were everywhere, and people loved buying books. Taking a book home from a shopping excursion was exciting. Those days seem to be gone.

Not sure if this is an observation or a rant, but here goes.

Friday, I was at the gym after swimming for an hour, showering, blow-drying my hair, and getting dressed. I sat on the bench, catching my breath while staring off into space and trying to convince myself to get up and go outside, where it was cold and wet.

I listened to the chatter of other women in the locker room, and one shared that she had a long drive scheduled for the weekend, but she didn’t mind because she planned to listen to a book on tape. This caught my attention. Awesome, a book lover. I wondered what book she planned to listen to.

Her friend interrupted my thoughts when she said that she canceled her Audible membership because the books were too expensive, and she couldn’t afford to keep buying books.

“Oh, I don’t buy books,” the first woman replied. Then she told her how she gets them free from libraries or other places.

Other places? What did she mean by that? Libraries are great because they buy books, but…
